SEO & AI search

Being findable is no longer the job. Being the answer is.

Search split in two. One half is still ten blue links where position decides the click. The other half is a generated answer that names two or three companies and never shows a list at all. Winning one and ignoring the other leaves half your category to whoever bothered.

The problem

You rank, and the buyer never sees it.

The uncomfortable part of AI search is that the losses are invisible. There is no line in your analytics called searches that ended in an answer about somebody else.

The answer arrives before the click

A buyer asks an assistant who to hire for a job in your category. It names two or three companies and cites a handful of pages. If you are not one of them, nothing in your reporting will ever tell you that this happened, and it happens all day.

Your reputation is not in the index

Twenty years of word of mouth, a name everyone in the province recognises, a sign on the busiest road in town. A model cannot see any of it. It reads pages. Offline fame counts for nothing until it is written down somewhere an engine looks.

Nobody decided to be invisible

A security plugin, a bot filter at the CDN, or a site that only renders once JavaScript runs. Nobody in the company ever chose to keep AI crawlers out. They simply never checked, and the engines quietly moved on to a source they could fetch.

The definition

What SEO & AI search actually means

SEO and AI search, in one paragraphSEO is the work of earning a position in a ranked list of results. AI search optimization, also called Generative Engine Optimization, is the work of becoming a source that a generative engine reads, trusts and names inside the answer itself. They share most of their foundations, because AI Overviews and the assistants retrieve from the same web, but they reward different things: classic search rewards relevance and authority at page level, while generated answers reward clarity, structure and verifiable facts at passage level. A company that wants to be shortlisted in 2026 needs both, run as one programme.
  • Classic search ranks pages against pages. Generated answers pick passages against passages, which is why a page that ranks can still never be quoted.
  • An engine cannot name a company whose pages it is unable to fetch, and most blocks are accidental rather than chosen.
  • The technical half of this work moves within weeks. The published-answers half compounds over months and is where the durable lead sits.
  • The metric that matters is not rank alone, it is how often you are named when a buyer asks your category a real question.

These are the sentences buyers type into Google and into an AI assistant before they ever contact anyone. Whole questions, with a decision attached to the answer.

The work

What the work covers

One programme with two halves: the unglamorous technical base that moves fastest, and the published answers that compound.

Technical foundation

Crawler access for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, server-rendered HTML, clean canonicals, sane redirects and pages fast enough to be fetched and indexed properly. This is where most sites are losing points without knowing it.

Structured data

Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Product, Review and BreadcrumbList, published consistently. It is the one place where you state the facts about your company in a form no machine can misread, and the alternative is letting an engine infer them conservatively.

Keyword and prompt mapping

The keywords buyers type into search, plus the whole sentences they type into an assistant, per market and per language. They differ more than people expect, and the second list is where categories are still wide open.

Answer-shaped content

Pages built around one question each, with a short self-contained answer near the top and the evidence underneath. It reads better for humans and it survives being lifted out of the page, which is the only form a generative engine can quote.

Entity and authority building

Your company name, address, phone number, founding date and services made identical everywhere a model reads them: your site, your profiles, directories, press, partner pages. Contradictions lower confidence, and low confidence means it names somebody else.

Measurement across both

Rankings and impressions on the classic side, and on the AI side a fixed set of buyer prompts re-run on a schedule across the engines, recording how often you are named and which competitors appear beside you. One report, both halves.

Step by step

How a programme runs

First results on the technical side within weeks. The visibility that holds takes three to six months, because it depends on published answers and consistent facts accumulating.

01

Baseline

Where you rank today, and what happens when your category questions are asked across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot. Who gets named, which pages get cited, where you do not appear at all.

02

Technical repair

Crawler access, rendering, speed, canonicals, sitemaps, llms.txt. The half nobody enjoys and the half that moves the number fastest, usually within days of the next re-fetch.

03

Structured data

Schema for the entities that matter: the company, the services, the locations, the reviews, the questions. Published site-wide rather than on a single page as a token gesture.

04

Question map

The keywords and the whole prompts, ranked by buying intent rather than volume. A question that gets asked forty times a month by people about to spend money beats one asked four thousand times by people who never will.

05

Answer pages

One question per page, answered inside the first hundred words, with the proof, the numbers and the dates underneath. Written by our own copywriters, reviewed by someone whose name goes on it.

06

Entity consistency

Profiles, directories, maps, press and partner pages aligned to the same facts. Tedious, cheap, and one of the few levers that lifts every engine at once.

07

Proof and freshness

Dated cases with real numbers, named authors, reviews collected properly. Undated marketing copy reads as unverifiable, and unverifiable sources get left out of answers.

08

Monitor and hold

Rankings plus the prompt set, re-run on a schedule. You see the trend per engine next to the competitors appearing beside you, and we go after the questions where somebody else is currently the default.

The difference

Classic SEO next to AI search

They are not rivals and they are not one budget line each. They are two outcomes from largely the same foundation.

What classic SEO competes for

  • A position in a list of ten links
  • Page against page
  • Keywords, links and domain authority
  • A buyer who is still comparing
  • Measured in rankings and impressions
  • There is always a second page

What AI search competes for

  • Being one of the companies named
  • Passage against passage
  • Clarity, structure and verifiable facts
  • A buyer who is already shortlisting
  • Measured in how often you get named
  • There is no second answer
The proof

What visibility is worth once it lands

Organic and AI visibility are the channel with no media cost attached, which is why they change the shape of a business rather than just its month.

Questions, answered

SEO & AI search, explained

What is the difference between SEO and AI search optimization?+
SEO competes for a position in a ranked list of links, and the buyer then chooses from that list. AI search optimization competes to be one of the one to three companies named inside a single generated answer, where there is no list and no second page. SEO competes page against page; AI search competes passage against passage, because engines quote paragraphs rather than whole pages. The foundations overlap heavily, which is why we run them as one programme.
Does classic SEO still matter if AI answers are taking over?+
Yes, and it is not a separate budget. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on the same index as classic search, and ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity lean on web search to retrieve sources. Good SEO gets you into the pool an engine retrieves from. AI search work decides whether you are the passage it quotes once you are in that pool.
How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?+
Three things have to be true. The engine has to be able to fetch your pages, which means not blocking OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot or ChatGPT-User in robots.txt or at your firewall. It has to be able to understand you, which is what structured data and consistent company facts are for. And it has to find a passage worth quoting, which means a question-shaped heading with a short, self-contained answer underneath it. Most companies fail on the first or the third.
How long does it take before we see results?+
Technical work such as crawler access, rendering and structured data changes what engines can read within days to a few weeks, as soon as your pages are re-fetched. Rankings on competitive commercial terms and being named for category questions take longer, typically three to six months, because both depend on published answers, entity consistency and proof accumulating across the web.
How do you measure AI search, or is it guesswork?+
You measure it by running a fixed set of buyer prompts across the engines on a schedule and recording what comes back: how often you are named, which of your pages are cited, and which competitors appear beside you. That gives you a share of answers per engine over time. It is not a rank tracker and it is noisier, but it is a real number and it moves.
Can a regional company compete in AI answers?+
Yes, and often more easily than in classic search. Category and location questions have far fewer credible sources competing for them, so a clean, well-structured local site with consistent details and real reviews can become the named answer quickly. What does not work is relying on local recognition, because a model cannot ask around.
Should we block AI crawlers to protect our content?+
If you sell something, allow them. Blocking GPTBot or Google-Extended does not protect you in any commercially meaningful way; it removes you from the answers your buyers are reading. Publishers with a licensing position have a genuine argument for blocking. A company that wants to be recommended does not.
Do you do local SEO as well?+
Yes. For companies with a service area or a showroom, the local layer is usually the fastest win: a properly filled Google Business Profile, consistent company details everywhere, real reviews collected on a schedule, and location pages that say something specific rather than swapping a city name. It also feeds directly into the location questions people ask assistants.
